About Mikeno Lodge

Mikeno Lodge is nestled within the lush Mahura Forest at the Park headquarters in Rumangabo and is prime position for spectacular views across the beautiful Albertine rift. The surrounding area abounds with wildlife and guests can enjoy seeing many species of endemic birds, blue and colobus monkeys, olive baboons and if one is lucky, the elusive bushbuck. The morning chorus of birds and eastern chimpanzees can be enjoyed from your cosy bungalow while sipping locally sourced coffee or tea on your terrace.

    Breakfast, lunch, dinner, or an afternoon tea can be enjoyed from the common area while blue monkeys swing from the branches overhead.

    The lodge’s main building is home to the bar and restaurant, as well as an open chimney; the ideal spot to have a local beer and trade stories with fellow travelers. Each of the 12 private bungalows contains a fireplace and a lounge corner. All bathrooms contain a bath, separate stone shower and flush toilet. Electricity is supplied by Virunga Energies’ hydroelectric station, guaranteeing a constant supply if power through round, 2 pin, EU standard plugs.

    During your stay, you’ll be able to visit the orphaned mountain gorillas at the Senkwekwe Centre; as well as the Congohounds, Virunga’s canine anti-poaching unit. The Mahura forest is interspersed with a multitude if path which can be explored on birding walks and to look for some of the primate species that call it home. You can also join our community rangers at dawn for a chimp habituation trek.

    The weather around Mikeno Lodge is fair. Daytime temperatures average around 24 degrees, although due to its location at 1554m in altitude, nights are cool and a good jumper is often required. During the rainy season, temperatures can drop sharply as the rains come in during the afternoon, sometimes by as much as 10 to 15 degrees
