Mikeno Mist Package

The Mikeno Mist package includes a three night stay in Virunga: two nights in Kibumba Tented Camp with a gorilla trek and one night stay on Nyiragongo volcano.

Daily Departure from Goma.

About the Mikeno Mist Package

Day 1: Arrive at Grande Barriere border crossing at 10:30am and ensure check-in with Virunga tourism office by 11:15am. The tourism office is conveniently located in the Grande Barriere border post building, opposite passport control. Guests will receive gorilla and volcano trek permits at check-in which must be presented at the start of each trek. Once check-in is complete, visitors will be transported to Kibumba.

Day 2: After an early breakfast at Kibumba Tented Camp, trekkers will head down the hill to meet their Ranger guides and have a briefing before the gorilla trek. Treks usually require 1-2.5 hours of hiking each way, depending on location of the gorilla group being trekked and the difficulty of the terrain. After spending the allotted hour with the gorilla family group, trekkers will make their way back to camp, enjoy a late lunch and have the rest of the day at leisure, including time for nature walks and bird watching.

Day 3: After breakfast in Kibumba, guests will be transported to the Kibati Ranger Post at 8:15am, departure point for the Nyiragongo volcano trek. On arrival to Kibati, guests will receive a briefing and will have the opportunity to hire porters. The climb up the volcano will take around four to six hours and trekkers will overnight on the summit.

Day 4: In the early morning, guests will leave the crater rim and start the descent back to Kibati. Average descent time is four hours. Once at the bottom, guests will be transported back to Goma with drop-off at the Grande Barriere.

We’ve been in several (lots) of « jungle » (tropical rain-forest, off grid) lodges in South America, Asia and Africa, and I’d have to say this was the most pleasant all-around experience we’ve had. Food, lodging, service – the whole ball of wax, reflecting other’s comments.
The hike to the gorillas was only 1.5 hours each way so a total of 4 hours with visit, rather than the 7 hours incl visit we experienced in Uganda. The viewing was better, we saw 3 groups instead of one, and they were more interesting here. All in all, well worth the $ and an all around enjoyable adventure. Beware the bumpy roads.

We stayed 2 nights in Feb 2020 at Mikeno Lodge, and couldn’t have been more pleasantly surprised by the relaxed sophistication of this operation.

The dedication of everyone connected to the park (rangers, trackers, tourism staff, lodge staff, etc) is unbelievable. They all stand whole-heartedly on the frontline of conservation, and it is demonstrated everyday in their professionalism and level of service.

The lodge has incredibly gorgeous views, with blue and colobus monkeys cavorting overhead. The cottages themselves are wonderful and you will welcome the warmth from the fireplace in the evening (already lit when you return from dinner).

Speaking of dinner, we are vegans and Mikeno’s new Chef, Lita (pronounced Leet), did a wonderful job of accommodating us.

We recently returned from our second trip to Virunga National Park and Mikeno Lodge. This park holds a special place in our hearts. Not only because of the landscape and the wildlife, but because of the people.
